Ledbetter announces campaign for Jackson County Sheriff; endorsed by Mike Ezell

PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Chief Deputy of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department John Ledbetter has announced his plans to seek the office of Sheriff in the November 2023 election.

“For the past twenty-one years, I’ve dedicated my life to protecting the citizens of Jackson County,” said Chief Ledbetter. “I have knowledge, education, and professional experience in law enforcement, as well as a track record of integrity and accountability. I’m ready to lead from day one as the next Jackson County Sheriff.”

His campaign has received the endorsement of current Sheriff Mike Ezell, Republican nominee for Mississippi’s Fourth United States Congressional District.

“Chief Ledbetter has my wholehearted endorsement in his campaign for Jackson County Sheriff,” said Ezell. “Over the last two decades I’ve had the privilege to know and work alongside him. I’ve gotten the opportunity to see his character and witness his effective, collaborative, and strategic leadership style. Chief Ledbetter will make an excellent Sheriff.”

Chief Ledbetter’s extensive law enforcement career includes years of service with both the Sheriff’s Department and the City of Pascagoula Police Department. Well-versed in the complexities facing law enforcement in our community, he is a graduate of the 275th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He attended William Carey University, where he studied Finance and Economics.

“I have clear priorities and strategic goals for the Sheriff’s Department,” said Chief Ledbetter, a fourth generation lifelong resident of Jackson County and the grandson of former Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter who served from 1976-1984. “I believe it’s important to take a collaborative, proactive approach to protect individual freedoms and constitutional rights in our community.”

An active community leader, Chief Ledbetter is former chairman of the Gulf Regional Planning Commission and currently serves as commissioner of the Jackson County Emergency Communications District. He’s on the Board of Directors for the Pascagoula Rotary Club, a graduate of Leadership Jackson County, a member of the Pascagoula Elks Club, and an associate member of the Jackson County Republican Women.

Chief Ledbetter lives in Hurley with his wife Lisa, a teacher in the Jackson County School District, and daughter Carley, age 13. They’re members of Hurley Baptist Church.
